Sacred Road: Yunnan to Tibet Overland Journey

Lijiang · Shangri-La · Deqin (Meili Snow Mountain) · Eastern Tibet · Lhasa · Everest Base CampShangri-La

About This Trip

The Yunnan–Tibet Overland Journey is one of the most beautiful, diverse, and culturally rich routes for entering Tibet. Following the historic Tea-Horse Road, this overland trip begins in the lush valleys and minority towns of Yunnan before gradually ascending into the high-altitude world of the Tibetan Plateau. Unlike many direct routes into Tibet—where elevation increases sharply—this itinerary provides a gentle, well-paced altitude ascent, making it one of the most comfortable and safe ways for travelers to reach Tibet.

More than a scenic drive, this journey is deeply cultural. Along the way, you’ll encounter the living traditions of the Naxi, Tibetan, and indigenous ethnic groups, visit ancient caravan towns shaped by centuries of trade and pilgrimage, and experience both the rustic charm of Eastern Tibet (Kham region) and the timeless spiritual atmosphere of Lhasa.

Traveling overland from Yunnan into Tibet means following the same path once taken by merchants, monks, and horse caravans on the ancient Tea-Horse Road. It is a pilgrimage through changing landscapes, mountain passes, sacred sites, and vibrant cultures—one of the most atmospheric, meaningful, and visually stunning ways to arrive in Tibet.

What’s the Highlight – Travel like a local!
★ Follow the ancient Tea Horse Road where traders and pilgrims once journeyed toward Lhasa, passing through dramatic gorges, traditional villages, and sacred landscapes.

★ Experience authentic Tibetan life in small communities rarely visited by mainstream tours — share butter tea, listen to local stories, and walk through villages filled with prayer flags.

★ Discover remote monasteries and sacred sites that reflect both Yunnan’s cultural diversity and Tibet’s deep spiritual heritage, far from the typical tourist crowds.

★ Stand beneath the world’s highest peak at Everest Base Camp, witnessing Mount Everest at sunrise or sunset — an unforgettable moment at 5,200 meters on the Roof of the World.

• Flexibility is part of the adventure. Mountain weather, road conditions, local regulations, and access restrictions can change with little notice, so parts of the itinerary may occasionally need to be adjusted. This includes the Everest region, which may sometimes be closed or inaccessible. If changes are necessary, we’ll always do our best to find the best alternative and preserve the spirit of the journey.
• Travellers aged 65 and over may occasionally be asked by local authorities or operators to provide a recent health certificate or sign additional health declarations or waivers. These requirements can change and may sometimes only be confirmed after booking. Your Tibet Travel Permit application and fee are included in the tour, with final approval subject to the relevant authorities.
• Are you ready to embrace the adventure? The Sacred Road asks for patience, flexibility, and a little resilience — and rewards you with some of the most extraordinary landscapes and cultures in China. If that sounds like your kind of adventure, say YES to the Sacred Road!
